PAMLICO COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL

A Brief History of the Pamlico County Arts Council

PCAC was first founded in 1976 in order to provide a Local Distributing Agent (LDA) for the Grassroots Funds provided by the North Carolina Legislature. These funds are allocated on a per-capita basis and the receiving county must have a local distributing agent. These funds must be matched by local funds or be reverted back to the state government.

The initial allocation in 1976 was approximately $400 which has grown to about $2,500 in recent years. Our local membership dues are our source of these matching funds since the county government did not vote to allocate any funds for the arts. Our membership numbers run from 200 to 300 each year and we now have working budget.

PCAC generally brings in at least three outside entertainment groups for the schools each year. These groups are in the areas of music, dance, drama or visual art. Our mission is to further the growth of the cultural arts in Pamlico County and to help preserve our cultural heritage.

PROGRAMS IN 1995-96
