SEVERE STORM AND HURRICANE LOSS PREVENTION TIPS

A good loss prevention plan will help limit your losses in the event of a disaster! As we are in the middle of the 1999 Hurricane Season, and as every day goes on, the potential for a storm stays with us. Many of the weather forecasters have predicted that we will have the possibility of several severe storms during the 1999 season. Listed below are some tips that can be taken to reduce damages during severe storms. While some are simple and inexpensive, others may be more costly. Reducing losses to life and property is the goal of Emergency Management organizations nationwide.

Check to insure that adequate tie-downs are installed on manufactured homes.
Elevate manufactured housing above the base elevation when possible. Information of flood elevations is available in the Pamlico County Building Inspections Office.
Check and secure anchoring for covered porches. Connections should be made in accordance with local building codes.
When re-roofing a house, check and inspect all decking and allied components. Add nailing to meet present codes and building standards. Install shingles that meet high-wind standards.
Install shutters to protect window glass and glass doors from flying debris.
Install gable end bracing.
Install garage door bracing.
Install patio and double door bracing.
Install tie-downs for sheds, fuel tanks, TV antennas, and satellite dishes.
Install backflow valves on septic/sewer lines in flood-prone areas.
Elevate flood-prone utilities, heating and cooling systems and appliances and anchor securely.
Use tie-downs or strapping materials to secure wood piles outdoors.
Keep downspouts and drains open and free flowing.
Thin our tree tops near buildings. A good rule of thumb is one-third of the tree limbs should be removed.
Replace weak trees with more wind resistant trees. Contact Pamlico County's Extension Service at 745-4121.

Finally, keep ALL important papers in a bank safe deposit box. This should include insurance papers and related documents.

Take a few minutes and determine which of these can be done in a timely manner and prioritize them.
