Meet The Fire Marshal/ Emergency Management Coordinatoralert, emergency, safety, help

David Spruill, the Emergency Management Coordinator -- (the title alone conjures up all kinds of ideas) -- has to be ready for just about anything. David Spruill wears the hat of Emergency Management Coordinator/Fire Marshall for Pamlico County and he spends most of his waking hours making sure Pamlico County is prepared for emergencies. More often than not, he personally attends various emergencies and lends a hand where needed.

Emergency ManagementDavid is a Level II Fire Fighter and Instructor and is also a live burn instructor. He has been in the Triangle (Bayboro) Fire Department since 1990. He served as Assistant Chief for four years and as Chief for a further four years. David is a native of Pamlico County and has been married to Wanda for 23 years. They have two girls 15 and 18 years old.

The position of EMC/Fire Marshall (David Spruill) reports directly to the County Manager. This is important, because in the event of a large-scale emergency, a well-structured Incident Command System (ICS) goes into operation. The ICS allows the County Manager to stay informed and passes critical information on to the County Board of Commissioners. ICS coordinates all aspects of the County's emergency response - including law enforcement, fire departments, rescue squad and county offices for effective operation.

David's duties also include supervising the County's full time EMT's on the Pamlico Rescue squad and acting as Fire Marshall. There are nine independent volunteer fire departments in Pamlico County. The Fire Marshall coordinates activities between the departments and the County to enhance training, response and readiness issues.

Emergency management is a time-consuming job and the greatest demands are placed on David when everyone else is thinking of their own families and making last minute preparations to deal with threatening emergencies. David's wife and children are proud and understanding of his role in the community.

Communication is a common word in David's vocabulary. He uses it frequently when referring to all aspects of his job. He has a healthy supply of brochures and information on just about any emergency topic and they are free for the asking. If you happen to be in the County Courthouse in Bayboro, the EMC/Fire Marshall office is at the East end on the first floor, stick your head in and say hi. You can also receive further information by calling (252) 745-4131.
