In October of 1997, Kevin Vanacore visited Oriental, NC in his 17 foot Boston Whaler. His stop in Oriental was a brief one during his six day, 1,050 mile solo trip aboard his Whaler. His trip ended as he tied up at the Indian River dock of Boston Whaler's manufacturing plant in Florida.

Asked why he embarked on such a trip, Vanacore commented,"I wanted to put myself in this boat for the ultimate trip I could plan, to see how it would handle in every sea condition. It's perfect. It's the only boat in the world for me."

This was no luxury vacation. Vanacore slept in the Whaler in his custom designed one-person popup tent. His evening in Oriental and one night in St. Augustine, Fla were the exceptions. Hot showers and comfy beds have a place even on frugal vacations. The trip budget of $600.00 included the gas for his 75 horsepower Mercury motor.

To make his destination goal in less than a week Vanacore traveled 10 to 11 hours each day using only his compass and a chart of the waterway. He was surprised at how challenging our waters are. And that was before he was escorted out of a North Carolina army base after taking a wrong turn.

Boston Whaler shipped Vanacore's boat to New York. Kevin flew back to New Salem, NY where he breeds horses, convinced of the seaworthiness of his craft.
