The Arts Flourish in Pamlico County
The arts are alive and well in Pamlico County North Carolina! The casual observer need only see a few of the posters, signs or newspaper notices to realize the variety of artistic offerings available. Theater, music, dance, graphic art and sculpture abound. The art community is growing and becoming more sophisticated.
The
Pamlico County Cultural & Civic Center in the heart of Oriental has become the hub of
many activities. In addition to having a resident theater group,
The
Pelican Players, the civic center hosts performances of
The
Pamlico Chorale, children's theater workshops, and many visiting performers. Local
artists work in many media types may be viewed in the lobby.
The Pelican Players has grown from the dreams of a few couples back in
1984 into a full fledged community theater effort. They have come a long way since the
days when they set up folding chairs in the Oriental Woman's Club and lighting the stage
with flood lamps. Now they take advantage of state-of-the-art lighting equipment in the
beautifully renovated "Old Theater" known as the Pamlico County Cultural and
Civic Center. Mounting multiple productions each year has brought the cream of talent in
the county to the top. The performing artists are well supported by the talent of the set
designers, costumers and property specialists that do a top notch job on each show.
The Pamlico County Arts Council was founded in 1976
and serves as the Local Distributing Agent (LDA) for the Grassroots Funds provided by the
North Carolina Legislature. The funds have been put to good use bringing art in its many
forms to local schools and communities.
